Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Japanese: ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ2, Hepburn: Sonikku za Hejjihoggu Tsū?) is a platform video game developed by Sonic Team and Sega Technical Institute, and published by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis console. It was released in Japan on November 21, 1992 and in North American and European markets on November 24 the same year. The game is an installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and focuses on the protagonist Sonic the Hedgehog and his friend, a fox named Miles "Tails" Prower, who must stop the series antagonist Dr. Ivo Robotnik from stealing the Chaos Emeralds to power his Death Egg space station. Development of the game began in November 1991, two months later than originally intended, because Sega of America initially felt that it was too soon for a sequel.     Found the soundtrack of this game at the local Animate store, so I bought it. I read the liner notes, which contains an interview with composer Masato Nakamura. Dude hit paydirt by making this music based off of only cheap concept art. Lol.

    Extremely trippy to hear his demos of songs in comparison to the video game chiptunes. Geez, all the OG Sega composers just happen to make their music the exact same way. Make a badass synth version. Hope that it still sounds cool when it gets converted into a chiptune. And...I dunno, form a band called Dreams Come True when the game becomes a smash hit.

    Sonic the Hedgehog 2 successfully builds upon everything that was great in its predecessor, but eliminates entirely only a few of its problems, while adding some interesting new ideas (like co-op) into the mix.
    Pros: Incredible level design, great platforming, awesome variety in gameplay and scenery, plenty of levels, when everything clicks together (which is more often than not) it's a platforming bliss, great sense of speed, entertaining boss fights, co-op, good music, this time around there's an actual story
    Cons: First few levels feel like a safe retread of the original, music is not as catchy as the original's, mix of fast action and slow platforming still has issues, slippery movement is still problematic in the slower levels/sections that require pinpoint precision, no save function/cheat codes to access levels in its original release, while it was full of devilish design decisions that would often spell death on your first time around, bullshit last level

    I love Sonic. That love spawns from Sonic 2 on the Sega Megadrive. It's an absolutely perfect 2D platform game with a great soundtrack, memorable stages and boss fights and a timeless playabillity. There are better Sonic games out there but the series' impact on me comes from part 2.

    This Sonic game has the widest variety of environments. It takes people through a wild roller coaster ride as they dash through mining tunnels and climb tall mountains. Sonic 2 is still one of the best games for a quick fix in side-scroller plaforming.

    This is where the series peaked for me as it struck a good balance between speed and exploration, while removing some of the stuff that didn't quite work in the first game and increasing the overall game flow (by implementing the spin dash). The halfpipe bonus stage is my favourite of the lot, which is kind of a big deal since beating the games without collecting the emeralds leaves me with an empty feeling inside. On the artsy side, the relationship between Sonic and Tails here is the most gripping depiction of unrequited love since Sweeney Todd.

    I prefer Sonic CD by a hair, but this game is still fantastic.
