Editing … Every Secret Wars tie in I read started well and finished in a rush. I liked Civil War and Renew Your Vows but they could've been way better. Thors was quite good as well.

I read the integrality of the nine issues of Secret Wars and the least I can say about it is that...it's weird, it's one of the weirdest stories I've ever read. I don't know if I understood everything, some things were complicated, some were a bit...dumb, and I don't even know if it was positive, or negative. It may be a first, but I can't rate it without reflection...

Editing … I quite liked it all the same but it was convoluted ridiculousness even by superhero comic book standards. As for the tie ins I did appreciate the Civil War, Thors and Renew Your Vows books but more than anything I was really disappointed with Ultimate End. Just as many 616 as Ultimate characters, a plot that's basically Spoiler616 and Ultimate characters fighting in a shared New York until Miles Morales shows up and tells them about the main Secret Wars comics and no send off for Ultimate Peter Parker, his supporting cast and villains even though they were easily the best thing about the Ultimate Universe.

Editing … I read a bit of every tie in and was interested by the Civil War too and Marvel Zombies was quite good. I'm reading all the comics from the Ultimate Universe right now because I missed quite a lot of stuff, but I really like the Spider-Man books and read a lot of Ultimate Fantastic Four back in time. I'll try to read them as far as I can because I like the Universe and I already know too much stuff about it without reading the appropriate material. xD

Editing … Civil War and Renew Your Vows both started really awesomely and I loved the premise of both but they didn't end on a high. You're right, Marvel Zombies was another good one. The Ultimate Spider-Man comics are my favourite comics, bar none, they just felt like everything that's great about 616 Spidey distilled and modernised minus all the mistakes 616 writers made over the years. I like the Ultimates as well because they're a darker more twisted take on the Avengers and it's really interesting. I didn't like Ultimate FF and X-Men as much, they're darker than the mainstream versions too but only slightly and it didn't make them more interesting. They're also obviously trying to be distilled/modernised takes of the mainstream versions but I don't think they pulled it off nearly as well as Ultimate Spidey.

Editing … I also loved #The Ultimates but I really need to read them again. I started the comics with the Ultimate Universe and the Civil War event of the main Earth in french and it's been a while now, that's why I'm trying to give a score to all the TPBs of the Earth-1610, which is a lot of work but I don't mind. I love Marvel, and I know they can do a lot better than Secret Wars and simplify their stories. During 2002-2010 approximately, the stories were excellent, the first major events of the new century led a golden age for Marvel and I loved this period, but now it's all about space and omnipotence...

Editing … Marvel were mostly great in those years so I'm almost inclined to agree with you about the 2002-10 were a golden age thing. Thing is Brand New Day and Sins Past happened in those years and they were Marvel's low point for me.

Editing … I didn't read them but I heard Sins Past was a bad one. I read a majority of Avengers and X-Men comics, and not a lot of Spider-Man. He isn't one of my favorite characters, I prefer Captain America and Thor. :P

Editing … Sins Past was bad but at least Marvel have pretty much pretended it never happened ever since. One More Day/Brand New Day was worse, meddling executives (damn you Quesada!) decided to retcon a couple of decades of character development and they did it in the most jarring way possible. SpoilerThey retconned him giving away his secret identity in Civil War even though it had only been a few months and we'd barely seen the consequences, they retconned his marriage to Mary Jane even though it had been established for decades and they decided to bring Harry Osborn back to life while they were at it because hey, why not? I get that a popular status quo tends to win out over character development in a lot of comics but the way they did it in this case was insane. Aunt May gets shot by a bullet meant for Peter, inexplicably no heroes can help even though the X-Men had a freaking healer mutant at the time so he and MJ make a deal with the actual devil to sacrifice the history of their marriage and the future of their unborn daughter to buy May a few more years. The devil throws in Harry being alive again as a bonus because he's a nice guy like that and then Spider-Man separately gets his secret identity back with an ass pull involving Tony Stark and Reed Richards' science and Dr Strange's magic working together to make the whole world forget. It's the worst comic storyline I can think of, bar none. No wonder Straczynski asked for his name to be taken off it.

Editing … Occasional awful writers aside Spidey's still my favourite comic character but yeah I really like Thor when he's written well too. He gets played down in the Avengers too often (really he ought to be able to take a lot of their villains down solo) but in his own comics he can be pretty great. Aaron's God of Thunder series was especially awesome, I was really disappointed it got cut short by Original Sin randomly making him unworthy (which we've still had no explanation for). Cap's kind of the reverse for me, he's way better as an ensemble character than he is carrying a story on his own.

Editing … I don't know if you read #Captain America (Vol. 5) but it's my favorite with him and he's excellent in solo. For Thor, #Thor (Vol. 3) is excellent the first two or three volumes are outstanding. I only read the first TPB of God of Thunder and really liked it but it wasn't my favorite. And I loved the #Siege event with Thor and Asgard. :D

Editing … Can't say I have, I'll maybe try it if I get Marvel Unlimited again after my dissertation's handed in (it was just too distracting). I've read #Thor (Vol. 3) actually, it's quite good and I love the issue where he thrashes Iron Man for everything he did during Civil War. I liked the God of Thunder series more a bit more though. I would say I like it a lot more but the God of Thunder series is too short.

SpoilerI read the two released issues and I can't really appreciate the event. I read every Avengers and New Avengers issues to understand this new concept and world, but really? Dr. Doom as a "god"? Hundreds of Thors to protect a wall from zombies and robots? A well-ordered world with a coutry for the Spider-Men, another with Hulks, another with tons of Iron-Men armors and another with Dwarves and Elves? This looks more messy than anything, but well, I suppose I've got to give them the benefit of the doubt. Let us see what happens next.
