Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch is the seventh major video game console developed by Nintendo. Known in development by its codename NX, it was unveiled in October 2016 and was released worldwide on March 3, 2017. Nintendo considers the Switch a "hybrid" console: it is designed primarily as a home console, with the main unit inserted onto a docking station to connect to a television. Alternatively, it can be removed from the dock and used similarly to a tablet computer through its LCD touchscreen, or placed in a standalone tabletop mode visible to several players.

Saved!Nintendo of Europe has posted a message to inform users that when they receive and unbox their long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 console not to remove the protective film layer on the screen.
https://mynintendonews.com/2025/06/01/nintendo-please-dont-remove-film-layer-from-nintendo-switch-2-screen/
What the fuck even is this. People have been buying electronic devices with glass screens for thousands of years, what happened now all of a sudden that Nintendo releases something with a film covering over it that we *specifically have to be told not to remove*.
Is this a new industry trend that I'm just now hearing about? Some kind of new EU regulatory countermeasure of some sort? Or is this Nintendo "being Nintendo" (perhaps feeling inadequate for not making Switch 2 a brand new gimmick) and deciding to pull something out of their ass just to fuck with us.-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I bought a phone then immediately bought and stuck on a safety screen

Saved!Fun fact, a Switch Lite with no sd card and no games downloaded has 24.4 GB free space.
At least it can fit Tales of Vesperia. (ツ)/¯-
Saved!NodleyEditing … There are probably Ataris with more memory than that. How is anybody supposed to game on that thing in this day and age?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I think you're supposed to get an SD card. PSP and Vita didn't originally come with any storage out of the box, not even for game saves, I personally think it's nice the Switch offers at least some to get you started.
-
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … Yeah not much but yeah sd cards are inexpensive nowadays. I have a big one and never ran into storage issues.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … By the way why the f is an update to final fantasy larger than the whole of breath of the wild? Did developers forget that optimization exists? It's like 90 GB total! I was not prepared for these sizes and the half hour install and the another half hour of updates. I buy consoles for plug and play. But now it feels like PC gaming.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I notice that Nintendo games tends to be better at filesizes than third party games.
-
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … "I notice that Nintendo games tends to be better at filesizes than third party games." Yes I think it's a pride thing for them. They want to show what clever tech wizards they are and demonstrate that nobody knows their console architecture as well as they do. That, or they have just worked on so many low tech consoles that it simply is like breathing to them.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I downloaded Mario Kart 8 out of desperation, turned out it was 11 GB which I thought was funny considering I just made a post praising their file sizes. I spent more time downloading the game than actually playing it.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … I had a Ghost of Tushima patch update of about 20 GB. 11 gigs for an entire game sounds like a pretty good deal to me now.

Saved! So the Switch 2. Better than the Playstation 2?!?

-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … Meh it's everything I asked for. Even backwards compatibility. I'll probably get one when it gets games I care about.
-
Saved!DJ_JJSliderEditing … Nintendo just really wants to pique my interest with Mario Kart, dammit. Probably would've avoided this system, but then Mario Kart 8 just had to be my favorite effing racing game ever. Y'know, besides all the other ones...
-
Saved!DJ_JJSliderEditing … Still cracking up at the cheap placeholder graphic for Donkey Kong, tho. That was great. Would've been even better if he was T-posing. Lol.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … It supports mice which is a huge deal at least imo. Imagine playing the Switch on its stand like a keyboardless laptop. It's a shame that all the mice games currently on Switch won't support it and will need a Switch 2 rerelease. Factorio, Rollercoaster Tycoon.. someone also mentioned Mario Maker but on second thought, I don't see what levels one could make in it that haven't been done already. Does anyone really care about making Mario levels at this point.

Saved!I just got a Dialga edition Switch Lite. (It was a surprisingly fair price, like 130 ish) Meaning now I own two. But when I use it I can smell the fumes. It's not sanitizer or perfume this time, it's a very mild smell like sweat/clothes but it nonetheless irritates my skin.
Are all Switches just like this? Maybe my first Dialga does it too and I simply never noticed. (In fact, I wonder if all devices too it to some degree. It might even be the root cause of my health issues as the older I got the more time I would spend in front of a screen.)
This is unbelievable. It's as though videogames are just over for me. PSP and Vita and smartphones are the farthest I can go. Everything beyond that has air vents. Steam deck even has literal articles published about the smell it produces so I obviously shouldn't even bother with that. Maybe I should be trying less hard to introduce more devices in my life, and instead work on doing the opposite, and my QOL would improve.-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … did you buy it from a sweaty nerd? mine smells like nothing and I got it new. Even after all these years they don's smell like anything.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … "It might even be the root cause of my health issues" most defiantly not. It would likely be lifestyle habits and/or anxiety in your case. You are overthinking things.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … If you don't like to smell the air vents why not simply stop playing handheld? You can set the switch far away and play the game on a screen.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Yeah it must be because it's used. My other Dialga was bought new, never had issues. It's odd though that I had this issue with three different used Switch Lites but I encountered it only once on a Vita or PSP. (all of which were used, as I never once owned a new one)
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … I don't like buying handhelds used. Nerds or grubby children have been holding them for hours in the heat of the summer.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … The good news is, I don't really notice it anymore. Maybe I just had to air it out. The bad news, it's still an unfathomably bad system. Worse than I remembered. The buttons suck. The eshop is all shovelware. There's this demo for Crypt Custodian which is kind of cute, but the game seems to have absolutely nothing to offer we haven't seen done before. It just happens to be much more decently made than the vast majority of indies and isn't blurry in handheld mode. That's where we're at.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … The e-shop is pretty sucky. It has no good filter system. You just have to look up the games you want online beforehand. It's not an "unfathomably bad system" though. Then people would not be buying it. I like the buttons actually. The pro controller is also nice. Only the d-pad has no accuracy so that should be replaced in the next iteration. Still my favorite design for a console. I want all future consoles to be home consoles/handheld. Graphics are good enough now. I don't give a shit about graphics or frame rates beyond a certain point. I just want fun games.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … The hybrid model product category comes woth this insane drawback where half of games are not optimized for handheld mode and look blurry. (I hope with Switch 2 they have the sense to make docked games run at the same resolution but somehow I doubt it because then they couldn't cheap out on the screen.) And that's assuming the game was even optimized for the system in the first place in docked mode, and often it wasn't due to it being a handheld system meaning it has weaker specs. It's this crippling flaw with the Switch that I didn't really appreciate the full magnitude of at first. Which seems to be a pervading feature of the Switch in general, it comes equipped with all these "stealth flaws" that you notice sooner or later.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … You mean the Switch's screen is 720p? The screen is so small relative to a tv that the loss in resolution is not practically visible unless you be licking the screen up close. I have never seen a better screen on a handheld than my oled screen. It makes games look really crisp. "crippling flaw " you really like superlatives. You'll find a flaw in anything if you look hard enough. If you hate your switch that much though I'd be more than willing to "dispose" of it for you. Just send it to me and I'll "recycle" it for you free of charge. :-P
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … Switch is 8 years old by now and it was already using older tech. It's impressive what that did with it. Future hybrid consoles will have much more power to work with. I'm excited to see how that turns out but as I said: we're approaching the point of diminished returns with console power. There is not much to be gained anymore.

Saved! So I decided to try to repair a Nintendo Switch Lite joystick. Long story short, I messed up. But at least the battery didn't explode on me. And geez, I should've known to remove that little connector attaching the battery to the motherboard.
I would complain more, but I just can't. I mean, this is a full-blown computer in a compact case. It's brilliantly stupid. Stupidly brilliant. Anyways, I'll just recycle it now...-
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … Oh that sucks but I bet you can still sell it for parts. I repaired a pro controller stick once and that was doable but I also saw video's on how to do the joycons and that looked hard. A switch lite would be even more difficult I can imagine. I bet Nintendo would have fixed the stick for free though if you had sent it to them. I think they are legally bound to do so. I got my joycon repaired by them and it was pretty quick. My condolences though to your switch. :-P I guess lesson learned?
-
Saved!DJ_JJSliderEditing … Of course I didn't lose my saves. I got me Nintendo Switch OLED edition, so I got it on lock baby. I just...wish the Switch Lite wasn't so cheaply made. Lol.
-
Saved!DJ_JJSliderEditing … For the record, I can't imagine playing the Switch without at least removable Joycons. It feels far too cumbersome to hold as a huge tablet thing. That controller with the slide-in ports is so much more ideal. Smaller, easily removable parts are just so much less breakable.
-
Saved!DJ_JJSliderEditing … Also, I've had a much easier time repairing the DS systems and the Game Boys. I mean, I thought I could get away with the Switch Lite. The name sounds similar to DS Lite. I even watched some videos and figured that the deconstruction process was simple enough. Then I had to somehow separate the motherboard from the shell and it's a bit of a nightmare. Oh well.

Saved!Husky WingEditing … I haven't played many platformers, so pretty much everything else catches my eye first, but it seems people really like those new Mario games
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I have 87 switch games, it's embarrassing, literally nothing except Shield and Odyssey are very good. You have a bunch I don't have however like Metroid and Arceus. This also may be the first I've heard of RDR ever being on the Switch.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Added Astral Chain. Rocky, are there really no other games from those 87 that you'd recommend? I guess lots of them are probably on PC, but no other standout exclusives?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … There are games I played a couple hours at most: Shadowverse, Burnout Paradise, Mr. Driller, Steamworld Quest, Hotshots Racing, and Horizon Chase Turbo. And I beat Bulletstorm so I think that game is alright. Mega Man 11 was incredibly fun for a bit but I stopped playing the moment I got to the Wily stages. I thought the demo for 9 Monkeys of Shaolin was sweet but I have yet to start playing the full game. And lastly there is Fez and King Oddball which are amazing but I don't own them on Switch, not yet anyways.
-
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … I update this list every time I install another game, but right now I wanna mention that I snagged an English translation of Yo-kai Watch :) - the game has an English release on 3DS (own it but never played), but the Switch remaster was only released in Japan.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I thought about getting Ni No Kuni 2 on the Switch. Which is funny bc i think Level 5 is a terrible developer and hasn't made anything good outside of the Layton series.
-
-
Saved! What are some must-play Switch games that I can't play on PC?
-
-
Saved!SandvichEditing … I mean if we're excluding emulation, BotW, TotK and Mario Odyssey are obvious. Fire Emblem Three Houses exceeded my expectations and is the first game in the series that really hooked me and I was able to finish, Black Eagles forever. DKC Tropical Freeze is the best 2D platformer I've played in the 21st century. I've been playing Pikmin 4 and it's a dramatic improvement over 3 but still not quite as perfect as 2. And Bowser's Fury is my favorite 3D Mario game despite only lasting 3-5 hours long. A shame there isn't a way to buy it without also buying a kind of mid Mario game. Those are the ones I would really hate to see someone miss out on.
-
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Zelda! :) Zelda and Xenoblade are the ones I'm probably getting to first. I'll have to play that Bowser's Fury.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … You could have had my Switch. I gave it away to the man who sold me my phone.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Well then I couldn't have had it! You gave it away! I very specifically needed a launch model, one with an unpatchable hardware exploit.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … It was only about 2 months ago I doubt it was a launch model. Even Isabella didn't want it, what was I supposed to do?
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Gee nodman. Shoulda bought her better games. You know they have Skyrim on that thing, right? And Dragon's Dogma! Honestly I might get both of those for my Switch, even though I'll give them way more playtime on PC. Or maybe I should wait for a Steam Deck to play those portably, since I do play them both with mods... plus it would let me continue with the same Dragon's Dogma save. But also, I haven't played a game portably in so long, I doubt I'd use a Steam Deck :| - maybe if I was flying more
-
Saved!SandvichEditing … Love my Steam Deck. Wish it had fewer compatibility issues, but it's Linux, what can you do?
-
-
-
Saved!I bought an unpatched Switch
-
Saved!I just hacked by Switch yesterday and dumped my save files and NAND, and also the contents of a couple cartridges. Using a RCM jig is kinda hard; I probably got a shit one and had to remove and insert a new paperclip. Also, there are like a billion different guides online, and some of them are outdated, making the hacking process no fun at all. I'm glad I got this over with.
-
Saved!I just upgraded my phone and got a free Nintendo Switch but I left it in the shop. Isabella didn't even want it. The nice guy who served me is taking it home instead. Last time I got a free PS4 and sold it.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … This is my new phone, I don't know anything about phones, I just asked for a decent camera a decent battery and nothing too expensive because I'll break it: https://www.expertreviews.co.uk/samsung/1418287/samsung-galaxy-a54-5g-review
-
-
Saved!LizardTaroEditing … Am I missing something here? You buy a new phone and get free stuff for no reason? How much did you pay for your phone?
-
Saved!SudertumEditing … British way to raise their sales numbers i guess, never got a gift to my new phone in germany.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … How is the phone Alex? I saw a couple Youtubes just now and they are all good but is your experience good too?
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I paid £40 a month for 2 years with nothing upfront, but that includes 120GB of data a month, free roaming abroad, theft coverage etc. It's basically the same deal I got last time with a few quid added for inflation. Yeah, we can get so many deals here comapanies will offer all sorts of deals to get you on their contract for 2 years.
-
Saved!SudertumEditing … So far good, battery is clearly an improvement holding 2-3 days until empty. Not done with all settings to start though, got no charger for first time with new phone (use the one from A50) bought headphones and an usb-c adapter too.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I'm updating from the A12 where the battery can last me 2-3 days easily so I'm happy to know the battery is good. You got no charger? Why? Am I not getting a charger? I'm worried now
-
Saved!SudertumEditing … I pay 10x24€+1€ over 2 years for the phone and 24x19,99€ for an all net flat with 10+8 GB (+4Gb? one time bonus) data per month.
-
Saved!SudertumEditing … Getting a charger with a phone was a no brainer here in Germany, but no more only got a cable (usb-c i think) to load /charge it via laptop or desktop i assume, luckily the one from my A50 works fine.
