You know what GTA has done better than all other crime sandbox titles, in my opinion, bar Sleeping Dogs?
    Melee combat!
In so many of these crime sandboxes, civilians are unable to defend themselves, or melee is simplified to allowing the protagonist to take enemies out in the tap of a button. In Saints Row, civilians are taken out in a single hit. In Watch_Dogs, Aiden plays an animation of him knocking out the enemy. Now, in Mafia III, we have the SLAM!
Now, sure, Mafia II may have had an actual melee combat system, but that would almost disconnect the player from the open world, locking them in "fight mode."
    Just Cause? WHIP, you're dead!

GTA did this right. Some NPCs run, some fight back, and they vary in defensive capabilities. They won't be too hard, but at least they'll put up a fight and increase your immersion. Sleeping Dogs followed this with its FREAKING SICK combat system as well.
What other crime sandbox games nailed or fucked up their melee combat? How was Mafia 1, True Crime, or The Saboteur?

Editing … I like everything about GTA4 better than the ps2 GTAs. I've never played a GTA game where I liked the meele combat. When I'd try a ps2 GTA, I'd quickly get tired of missions, then I'd kill some people till I get arrested, go "that was pointless" then stop playing, I don't get them. I like the melee combat in Sleeping Dogs, it's fun stuff.

Editing … I feel you on GTA, the open world quickly feels unfulfilling.

Editing … I've never enjoyed GTA as an open world game. I really enjoyed playing through the story in Chinatown Wars, and half the story in GTAIV (then that famous bank mission was just too hard for a game without checkpoints). I kind of liked Red Dead as an open world game, I did a bunch of side stuff even though the rewards were pointless. I slightly enjoyed collecting bullshit in Bully, but the days were so short that it didn't feel like much of an exploration game. I like open world design like Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Far Cry 3 best.
