"Cake" is a rather below average film that bolsters a great performance from its lead actress - Jennifer Aniston. All the critics/reviews that say this is some of the best film work Aniston has ever done are 100% right. She really does give it her all with a character who isn't all that great or compelling & in a film that isn't all that deserving of such a performance. Without her this film is a rather tedious experience that doesn't have all that much going for it. Its central idea about a individual dealing with depression & fighting off suicidal thought after great tragedy didn't resonate well with me at all. While Aniston shows up strong and acts the hell out of what little of a character she is given, the rest of the film doesn't show up or step up at all. Strong emotion is lacking throughout and for a film that deals with such a emotionally charged material that's not good; there is just no emotional punch at all to this film. There's also this sort of subtle comedy element that just never gets off the ground. Like I can clearly tell the film wants me to chuckle as a sort of way to alleviate the "serious" tone of the film, but because the film is lacking so much in the emotional department it just kind of falls flat; it's more awkward & detrimental to the main character then beneficial or endearing. So, when it's all said and done, "Cake" is a rather mediocre film made better by Jennifer Aniston stepping up in the acting department. The film is really worth the time it takes to watch just to see how good Aniston does in it. But other then that there's not much else I can recommend. It is really a rather lackluster experience made somewhat better by Aniston's performance.
