I was having fun, but then I lost several hours of progress all at once, so I'm probably done with this game forever.

Editing … Yesterday I had this crackpot idea to play FF6 again. (It's been so long it'd feel like a new game hopefully?) I'd do it on the PSP via SNES, but I remembered there is a Switch version too, and wondered if there are advantages to it. Also the SNES emulator really sucked. (But I only tried it for about five seconds, and didn't change any settings like enabling vsync whatever the eff that means)

Editing … Turns out english patches for FFV exist too. That's fun. I originally played it on the PS1. In hindsight it's amazing I beat it and found it so enjoyable, and I wonder if the difficult was nerfed for western audiences seeing as that was supposedly the case for the SNES version of 4 and the GBA versions of 4 through 6.

Editing … I reached a point in the game where lots of enemies have attacks like "Death" that just automatically kill the player. That would have been unbearable without constant checkpoints, and the ability to turn off encounters.

Editing … Yeah, I just click in the right analog stick and encounters turn off. Normally I want all the encounters I can get, for all the XP, but not when they're spamming automatic team wipes. They're total bullshit, but the checkpoints really keep them from feeling like much of a nuisance.

Editing … Wait does this mean FF7-9 on Switch have this feature also?? Come to think of it, all I actually know at this point is that FFV has it. I was assuming 1-6 do, based on '"logic"'. P.S. Analog stick also seems like a strange place to map it. Not a bad placement, necessarily, just not one you'd expect.

Editing … It's probably a feature inherent to all the pixel remasters. I dunno if the 3D games have been given this as well. And yeah, I guess that is a bit odd. But I can make some sense of it too. Since the vanilla games didn't have any analog input, the analog sticks can control new non-vanilla features.

Editing … It's still really befuddling to be in the middle of a fight and suddenly the enemy casts Death, so my entire team just dies. It only sends me back to the beginning of the room because of the remaster's checkpoints, but this seems like dumbass game design. Right now it's one of many auto-kill attacks, which enemies spam constantly at this point in the game.

Editing … Is it really the entire party? I always thought it was a single target attack. Well, at least it was like this in FFIX and FFX. Can't you put your party members in some sort of status that automatically revives them with 1HP after they get killed?

Editing … There's a single target and multi-target variant (the multi-target variant might always attack the player only if their level is a multiple of some number, and it just so happens that my team is always affected by this), and there are also lots of attacks that basically function the same way, just auto-killing either a single target or group target (or the enemy can rapid-fire spam the single-target variant). I don't think I have any items or spells that would cause an auto-resurrection.

Editing … Me too that's how I played FFV originally. The pixel remaster is way better though. You can enable/disable encounters on a whim. It really works. Also the updated music is god tier. And you can move diagonally. There are some updated graphical effects too for things like fire and waves splashing which imbue the game with a certain elegance. x) You guys... this version is so good. I can only imagine what was done with FF6.

Editing … Welp, I ended up turning music off. So much for the arranged bgm. xD Also by the way, Blue Mage is a fucking pimp. I always loved the sprite. Was considering doing a blue mage run. But the job just seems downright pathetic thus far. I have only two spells and they're both worthless. One of them gives blindness to all enemies. But I find it disappointing that there is no indicator for blindness on an enemy as there is with player characters. That's just really lazy imo. They could have easily added that I think. I got a spell that can turn an enemy into a toad, at least with that one the enemy visibly does become a toad. When it works that is. WHEN it works. It almost always misses.

Editing … Update. I have four blue magics now. I also gained accesss to some more jobs, wondering if I should switch my focus away from blue mage. That said, I keep noticing things that could have been improved. For instance it would be nice if enchanting a blade had an indicator to let you know it's on. Also, I find it strange that so many of Faris's job outfits are female coded. P.S. Just now I tried to look up the mtg cards for Lenna, Faris, and Galuf, and it turns out only Bartz has a card so far, so I'm guessing the cards for the other 3 haven't been spoiled yet.

Editing … *We* know Faris is a girl. Nobody in universe knows except for 3 people. This being the case, it makes no sense that most of her costume are of her being a girl. I could have seen it maybe making sense if those job sprites are acquired later in the game. (Kind of like how Galuf's job sprites become swapped halfway through. *cough* If you know you know)

Editing … P.S. That fire boss was a real pain in the butt, I don't remember it being nearly that hard. But even when you beat it you're still not done. It becomes one of those "escape before time runs out while dealing with encounters and there are treasure chests everywhere and this is the very last time you'll be able to collect these treasure chests." ohhh my lord. This game is such a journey.

Editing … Yeah that doesn't seem like it would be plausible in real life. It's a funny thing, the game is rendered in Super Famicom sprites so it's able to just get away with it. At best we can only headcanon what she looks like irl. It gets weirder when you consider the game doesn't take place on Earth and therefore the characters are technically a fictional species.
