It was originally part of the Fawcett Comics in 1939, another company, but DC thought Captain Marvel was super similar to Superman so they sued their ass. Fawcett stopped making the comics in 1953 and eventually Marvel made their own Captain Marvel character in 1967. DC ended up buying the original Captain Marvel in 1973, but Marvel already copyrighted the "Captain Marvel" name, so while they could use the name, they couldn't give the name to the comic books, and ended up calling the comics "Shazam" which was Captain Marvel's catchphrase. With time they decided that the best course of action was to just rename the char Shazam, which they did in 2011.
