First NPC I ran into, I stare him right in the eyes as he's apparently unable to see me, hardly even standing in the dark. Eventually he realizes why his breath is breathing back at him, and why the view's been so obscured, and he runs back and opens fire. I shoot him in the head, then I hear gunfire go off somewhere else. Guess the alert's up, though my gun was silenced. I proceed forward, but the nearest NPC has apparently not been alerted, so I run right for him to see if he'll notice me. He does as I come near, so I shoot him in the head. At this point my initial impressions of the stealth and AI are pretty negative of course, so I'm not feeling incentivized to take the game seriously. Level 100 Skyrim stealth would've worked better.
I played for another minute or so before quitting.

Editing … I feel a bit silly but I still think the game should feel sillier, since for the time I continued playing, I could definitely hear that *someone* was on alert, but not any of the NPCs who I met, who were closest to the shots.

Editing … You can't tell me that the stealth was so broken that an NPC couldn't see me standing point-blank in front of his eyes, or that the only NPCs alerted by his shooting were ones too far away to do anything about it, not the ones immediately ahead :p

Editing … I wasn't there to see it. Stealth meters and shit in games like Thief and Splinter Cell do tend to lead to some derpy moments when you're in maximum darkness, but the AI was pretty sharp for 2005 and hasn't even really seen much improvement since then.

Editing … Wait, I just watched some gameplay footage of the first mission which features dudes doing some target practice, which is why you heard distant gunfire. Ambient noise also makes you harder to detect. There are strategies like turning up the volume on radios which will muffle the sound of your footsteps and allow you to sneak faster. Also your statement of "Guess the alert's up" is difficult to interpret, but if an alarm has been sounded you'll get a difficult to miss noise cue and generally your support team will usually comment on it. I'm pretty sure Chaos Theory ditched enemies raising the alarm via radio and it can only be done with alarm panels. Alarms also don't work the way they do in Metal Gear Solid where everyone starts trying to hunt you until you hide and it goes away. They remain in effect until the end of the mission, making it more difficult each time it's sounded with guards being more on edge and better armed, defense turrets coming online, more doors getting locked etc. Enemies in the immediate area will attack but the rest will simply be more on guard.

Editing … Also I'm in the mother of all gaming ruts. Everything that's come out after 2015 hasn't been a pimple on the asses of the Witcher 3 and Bloodborne. But this year's Spider-Man and Into the Breach are good palette cleansers if you haven't played them yet.

Brilliant stealth gameplay, messing around with enemy AI's is rarely this much fun. The soundtrack is pretty sweet as well.

So I was playing Chaos Theory the other day when I decided to take a short break and listen to some music when Ozzy Osbournes' "sin" started playing: "who turned off the light? oho hooo a shadow in the night" - kind of fitting :)

Also, there's an interesting nod to 2004's Half Life 2 in Chaos Theory's dialogue
    Sam: "I forgot my crowbar."
Grim: "Whatever, crowbars are only for geeky video game characters anyway."

Pandora Tomorrow had a mission where you had to secretly meet up with a double agent called Dahlia in front of a church. Silent Hill, anyone?
