Another Tales classic. While I still believe that Vesperia was better, I found that Abyss was just as fun. The characters in this game were really fun and well developed. The music was also good. The combat, which is the predecessor to Vesperia's battle system, was also fun and I found the boss battles to be quite interesting. Overall this was a very good game.

Lazy port definitely and still one of the more controversial Tales titles in character development, it's a well-worth experience on the go, even a second time on the 3DS.

      Editing … Controversial? How so?

Editing … It gives the main character a brash ignorant tone with inconsistent desires for the first third of the game and gambles before it pays off...which it DOES do in wonderful spades.

Editing … Oh yeah, he does start off as the least likable protagonist ever. :D I relate to him so much as his character goes through all those twists and turns, though.

(WARNING: SPOILERY SPOILERS. No watching the video unless you've beaten the game! Don't read the description either!) One reason I know this is my favorite game of all time is that hearing or watching certain songs and scenes again brings back this avalanche of feels--every time, without fail. The ending of this game, in particular, was so amazingly well done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWEr_LsfC4U

The "Linear Motion Battle System," an addictive blend of classic, JRPG party micromanagement and frenetic action, returns while offering some twists unique to Abyss. Beneath what at first appears to be another typical "convoluted JRPG story" lies a cast of supremely relatable and entertaining characters, each of whom must face his or her own demons over the course of the game. Most moving is the story of Luke fon Fabre, whose unforgivable mistakes lead him to question the meaning and value of his very existence... and, yes, on a journey to save the world. It's a crock pot of delicious, slow-cooked themes and character development, seasoned with the quirks of anime that fans love.

Editing … I just saw that this is apparently your fav game of all time and immediately went to Amazon to add it to my wishlist. What are the main differences between the PS2 and 3DS versions? Which one did you play? Are "Tales of" games standalone experiences like Final Fantasy games, or do I have to play the other games in the series to understand what's going on in this one?

Editing … They're standalone experiences, except the ones that have sequels, like Symphonia (and sequel Symphonia: Dawn of the New World) and Xillia (and sequel Xillia 2). I played the 3DS version and AFAIK the only differences are the 3D, and better load times.

Editing … Oh, also you can allocate artes (techniques basically) to the touch screen as shortcuts which is nice.
