The "Linear Motion Battle System," an addictive blend of classic, JRPG party micromanagement and frenetic action, returns while offering some twists unique to Abyss. Beneath what at first appears to be another typical "convoluted JRPG story" lies a cast of supremely relatable and entertaining characters, each of whom must face his or her own demons over the course of the game. Most moving is the story of Luke fon Fabre, whose unforgivable mistakes lead him to question the meaning and value of his very existence... and, yes, on a journey to save the world. It's a crock pot of delicious, slow-cooked themes and character development, seasoned with the quirks of anime that fans love.

Editing … I just saw that this is apparently your fav game of all time and immediately went to Amazon to add it to my wishlist. What are the main differences between the PS2 and 3DS versions? Which one did you play? Are "Tales of" games standalone experiences like Final Fantasy games, or do I have to play the other games in the series to understand what's going on in this one?

Editing … They're standalone experiences, except the ones that have sequels, like Symphonia (and sequel Symphonia: Dawn of the New World) and Xillia (and sequel Xillia 2). I played the 3DS version and AFAIK the only differences are the 3D, and better load times.

Editing … Oh, also you can allocate artes (techniques basically) to the touch screen as shortcuts which is nice.
