I finally reached New Donk City, but something just feels off. I mean, there's a dwarf plumber with a big head hanging around actual humans? Oh yeah, that's perfectly normal. 9_9

...This game is great. Lol. I'm coming for you, Pauli--I mean Peach!

So I bought an OLED Switch just so I could play Super Mario Odyssey in all its glory. Wacky motion controls and everything. And holy crap, this game is like crack. I just realized that I spent four hours trying to find all the moons in the Wooded Kingdom.

So uh...yeah. I guess I really needed open-world Mario. Now we need a game where Mario takes over the entire United States.

Oh wait, I forgot that he has a theme park now. Hmm...Mario world domination, baby.

Everything just feels so cool in Odyssey. Mario lost some of the floatiness in his jump, but the cap throwing idea is awesome. I still have a grudge against the some of the special motion control attacks, but Odyssey pretty much kept all of my favorite parkour moves from Mario 64.

My only minor complaint is that this new world is almost too unnaturally set in the real world. Now Mario has to coexist with giant dinosaurs? And I'm not talking about freaking Yoshi. It's a T-Rex. I guess the details aren't that important, but what the hell? Mario must be from the moe world.

Editing … Well, it's more about how the game tries to convince people to buy the expensive Joy-Con, even though the Switch Lite works perfectly fine. The motion for the over-powered spin cap move would be a little tough to pull off, even with Joy-Cons.

Oh how I miss the spin jump from Mario Galaxy. I wish my experiences with 3D Mario games didn't always feel glass half empty. In the 20+ years since Mario went 3D on the N64, only now have I finally played a 3D Mario game with camera controls I actually like. But now I can only lament that they've ditched the spin jump, the gravity mechanics, the crazy powerups and virtually everything else I loved about the Galaxy games. Oh, and Yoshi in SMG2 was the best. The Cappy mechanics just don't hold the same appeal for me. I still love all three games but I don't feel like I'm asking for the the Power Moon and the Stars here /bad referential humor.

An all-around great game. After the very disappointing Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo is finally back with an epic adventure that isn't held back by silly time restrains. It features a plethora of great ideas, with Cappy being only one of the many things that will put a smile on your face. There's so much stuff to that it might become overwhelming even! I spent over 100 hours on Super Mario Odyssey and it was a time well spent.

It's not without issues though. I feel like I can't control Mario as easily as in Super Mario Galaxy - most of the jumps seem a little too short. Many things aren't properly explained in the game, especially some moves with Cappy which are necessary to complete certain tasks. Motion controls are forced - there is no way you can get every moon without motion controls as they are often more powerful and accurate than using the buttons. Very obvious pop-in and some low-resolution textures can sometimes be irritating, which is a shame as it's otherwise a graphically amazing game with smooth animations. The hardware clearly isn't powerful enough for this game. It's obvious that Nintendo wanted to do more than they actually could due to the constrains of the hardware. Sometimes collecting the moons feels more like a grind than something that should be fun.

Yes, there is room for improvement, just as there was room for improvement in Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo actually did improve in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and put out - at least in my opinion - the best 3D platformer ever. I want Super Mario Odyssey 2 to be that kind of game.

This game is everything I hoped for, and more. It takes 64 and goes completey nuts with it! The Cappy mechanic is simply genius, it adds so much variety and creativity to the gameplay. It's so fun to search all kingdoms for things to control, and see what each of them does. The finale of the game might be the best Mario ever had, and i'm having a blast with the post-game content so far.

It's a masterpiece! If you don't have this game, get it. If you don't have a Switch, buy it and the game as well. If you don't have money, sell your ass on the streets until you have money for both. You can thank me later.

Distant NPCs are rendered in 2D (and not very distant), and while the game plays at 60fps, some NPCs are rendered at 30fps. The game currently runs at 720p.
Not criticizing, just sharing some compromises. It's choices like this that allow the game to run at 60fps, a decision that greatly improves gameplay. Good job with the priorities, Nintendo.

I tried to watch something in 720p this year and my intestines exploded out my ass and my eyes squirted yellow puss and my fingernails shriveled up. But seriously wtf why do people care about this? I watched a fucking VHS this year and it was fine.

Let's be honest here, the first two things that came to my mind when I saw the Mario Odyssey trailer during the Nintendo Switch presentation were Sonic 2006 and that one treehouse of horror segment from like 20 years ago where a 3D version of Homer enters the real world.

Seems I wasn't the only one who made that mental association:
