What a great game....I'll never forget when this took on Super Mario World in EGM magazine...and won! A timeless classic featuring game play that was soooo much faster than any other game at the time. What a great mascot for's too bad they shelved their former mascot, Alex Kidd, when Sonic took over. There was plenty of room for both of them!

Score: 10.0 (Classic!)

Sonic the Hedgehog has so much spirit, that even when it ever so often stumbles (or kills you), you just can't get mad at it, because you know its heart is in the right place and that it will bring back that smile on your face soon enough.
Pros: Sonic's original design is a thing of beauty, fantastic and catchy music, variety in both level design and gameplay straight to the end, multiple paths, instead of copying Mario, it did its own thing and succeeded, fast levels are great, slow levels are great...
Cons: ...the ones that mix fast action and slow platforming - those have issues, the zoomed in camera works against the blistering speed in the faster levels/sections, the slippery movement has some issues on the slower levels that require pinpoint precision, in-game story is almost non-existant, the original game had no save function, nor did it give you cheat codes for later levels, while it was full of devilish design decisions that would often spell death on your first time around

Score: 8.0 (Great!)

free fall If you're jonesing for speed I recommend Sonic Rush, really underrated and FAST game.

Giga Pudding That looks pretty cool! It even eliminates one of my main gripes regarding the faster levels (has the zoomed out camera).

So I never played the first Sonic game for the Game Gear as a kid. I had all the other Game Gear Sonics, but I assumed that it was just a more primitive version of Sonic 2 (which was already the weakest of the GG Sonic games), so I never bothered picking it up. But just recently, I got myself a refurbished Game Gear to relive some old childhood memories, and I saw the first Sonic game at a local shop for $5, and I figured that I might as well complete the collection.

Not only is this game better than any other GG Sonic game, but I honestly think it's a far better designed game than the first Genesis/Megadrive Sonic game. Seriously, Ancient seemed to get how a Sonic game was supposed to work far better than Sonic Team did at the time. Everything just flows well. There's nothing like those annoying moving block sections from Spring Yard Zone or having to slowly ride across the lava like in Marble Zone. You get to keep moving, and the levels are constantly just fun. Even Labyrinth Zone is far less annoying than in the Genesis game. And the final level is epic in a way we never saw again until Sonic & Knuckles. I've had trouble getting back into the original Sonic game, usually getting bored around halfway through, but the 8-bit Sonic 1 basically felt like playing the version I remembered from my childhood.

I wish these two versions were listed separately here. The Genesis version I'd give either a 6.5 or 7, but this 8 bit version would be in the 8.5-9 range. It's a damn shame we never saw any other Sonic games from Ancient.

this is at game more about the music, and just running as fast you can go, and dont die. the ring sound when you pick them up, clinging in your ears, like coins, and great music. this is one of the best platform game ever.

Mega Drive: Still a great game, with excellent art direction and music, though having tried speed running it recently I noticed quite a few bugs and physics quirks that made it a bit frustrating (on the other hand I discovered a bunch of shortcuts as well and Marble Zone is no longer as much of a chore to play). Nowadays I prefer playing the romhack that let's you spindash as it's a much smoother experience, and I'm eagerly awaiting a Steam release of the HD iOS version.
