So I guess I have to play this game over again as the boy character now. I enjoyed the first quest, but I honestly don't know if I have the patience for another game. Ugh.

It's better than Drakengard 1, but that's not saying much. This game is so meh.

Editing … I played the demo for this recently, I expected this to be an open world game but it was more like a linear beatemup, like a PS2 rental. Story seemed neat, but I don’t see myself playing through it just for that.

Editing … It's a well-made game with gorgeous graphics and music. However, it's very, very repetitive.

Editing … I'm more inclined to try Astral Chain on the Switch now. (which I own but still haven't started yet) Judging by Nier Automata, all Platinum games are probably less complicated than I imagine so I might as well check them off my backlog. By the way, I only found out recently that the character art for Astral Chain is by the guy who created the mangas Video Girl Ai and I''s. Never would've thought..

Editing … Tried Astral Chain, hated it. You don't control your Legion, yet it deals more damage than you do. The very concept is antithetical to videogames. In general, games ought to always have you as the sole catalyst of interaction/activity.

Editing … That sounds almost like Loop Hero, except Astral Chain isn't even trying to become a rogue-like. I dunno. The last great RPG I played with bonafide AI partners was Persona 3. And then Mitsuru kept casting that worthless Marin Karin spell, so that part wasn't fun. Lol.

Editing … AI partners typically aren't stronger than the player avatar. They're usually weaker or, if they're particularly strong, they might be close to equal. There may be temporary exceptions for story purposes. (e.g. Sephiroth) But Astral Chain presumably takes it for the entire game. Which would make the entire game essentially a Nibelheim flashback front to end, while also forcing you to be additionally bogged down with having to manually release and recover your Legion as the situation calls for it, while keeping an eye your Legion's fuel meter. Bleh.

Editing … You played Loop Hero? I don't ever remember talking about it on here, but I did see on Steam once while browsing for games to play on my laptop. It looks confusing though, and some of the user reviews echo that sentiment. I don't see how it really relates to Astral Chain, but at the time, I was simply looking for low requirement games to play on my laptop that haven't been ported to Switch. Maybe I should get it for curiosity's sake, but I'm looking at it again now and it looks really damned confusing, wow. Every screen is nearly stacked with menus and UI elements. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1282730/Loop_Hero/

Editing … I didn't get to play Loop Hero, but I heard a ton of buzz about it for some reason. The concept sounds pretty funny, so I might try it out just for fun. Inscryption also sounded kinda trippy.

Repeating the first playthrough of Nier: Automata. Apparently there's a s**t-ton of side quests that are easy to miss, because the 3D map sucks in this game. Seriously, the game gave me no hints that the Sunken City area was unlocked. The choppy polygons didn't help either.

Thank God that the fighting system is awesome. But yeah, Yoko Taro games are hella frustrating.

Pretty fun game so far. I came in for that genuine next-gen experience and I got it. I mean, I got it for the joke endings. Come on, dumb text dialogue is awesome.

I have yet to play more than two hours but I will go ahead and pre-emptively give this game a 3.o / 1o.o: making the players loop the tutorial without being able to save is … fine in and of itself, I guess, if it's tied to the narrative the way it is (as in: the characters feeling trapped in a loop). Except for the part where you cannot skip the non-interactive cutscenes so as to frustrate the players into not wanting to play your game any more before it even started. That's just crappy game design.

I should probably love Automata a lot more than I do, but I have the smol brain and I didn't really catch onto any of its philosophical themes or messages, all I really soaked in was the bleak story and world, and the fun gameplay, which was all great, but I don't prefer it to the first game's more personal and clearer story, and I've never been that big a fan of orchestral soundtracks (though don't get me wrong I did love Automata' soundtrack, but I didn't completely fall in love with it like I would a simpler soundtrack like the first game's), so I pretty much prefer the first game on every non-gameplay front. But that aside objectively speaking I can recognise it as a fucking masterpiece that deserves to go down in history as one of the best games of all time, maybe best things from any medium ever made. And don't misunderstand, I did really like the game. I just feel like I don't like it enough. But personal tastes and all that. And I'm still very happy that it put Nier and Yoko Taro in the spotlight where they deserve to be.

640 x 480, windowed, lowest graphics, and it STILL crashes. Another case of a terrible PC port. Meanwhile everyone with an Nvidia card is enjoying it to the fullest. Why is there so much bias against AMD?

So after 35 hours over the course of 4 days, I've beaten the game. Endings ABCDE, done. It's gonna take some time to adjust to real life after that. To accept that the incredible journey I just went on wasn't real. The people I've met, the amazing things I've seen... None of it actually happened, and I was just sitting at my desk playing a video game. But it felt so real... I think the last time a work of fiction made me feel that way was when I watched Interstellar.

Needless to say, this game is gonna need a spot very high up on my list of all-time favorite games. I just don't know where yet.

Editing … What a year it been for gaming, japanese games in particular. GOTY #1 Nioh - built upon Souls combat into something fresh, complex and deeply satisfying. Nitpick -Shame the magic is OP and enemy/level design pales in comparison to Souls. GOTY #2 Zelda BoTW - makes me excited for open world games again. Theres so much interactivity in Hyrule it puts so many other open worlds to shame. Nitpick - lazy dungeons/bosses. GOTY #3 Nier Automata - Granted ive only finished playthrough A&B so far but i have no nitpicks and it continues to blow me away. Stunning, beautiful. The true GOTY right here i can feel it!
