Now we're starting to take off! Intolerance is a very ambitious movie, and like a lot of these silent age epics, it's kind of dull. But at the same time it's very interesting. Griffith is obviously an incredibly talented director, who could have excelled in the 40's or the 50's. Now his cinematography is a bit too ambitious for the low quality of film, and spoken dialogue would mean the world for this film. Still it's a very fine piece of cinema, and it's influences are very apparent over multiple decades of (primarily) European art film.

Editing … D.W. Griffith, along with Charles Chaplin and George Meliés, are the ultimate foundations of filmmaking.

Editing … I agree, and I'd add Buster Keaton and Fritz Lang to that.
