Welp, I finally bought and read all the prequel comics, so I "played" this through for the story. I'm not a fan of Mortal Kombat and rarely play fighters in general, so I just slapped it on the easiest difficulty and punched my way through the campaign (and the gormless heroes and villains). It's a rough game, and it needs a hell of a lot of polish, but I appreciate the attempt at giving a fighter a "proper" story mode. After the comics, the plot was a bit lackluster, but I didn't really expect it to be anything else. The interactive elements during fights were pretty neat and I'm sure it's pretty fun competitively. I'm interested to see where they took the sequel as I have heard it's a big improvement.

Finally Ed Boon's studio is allowed to do something other than another Mortal Kombat game, even if a DC fighter isn't a big stretch. Following the formula of MK11, 2D combat via detailed 3D models is the name of the game, with an emphasis on the story mode and single player content. It plays a lot like MK with a little more Street Fighter influence, but as staccato as ever. Environmental interactions are a cool addition done well. Unfortunately single player content comes off a bit short compared to MK11 and the roster could have been larger and better chosen. Also the tone is too grimdark, the story is largely terrible, and some of the characters designs are pretty bad.The core is fun but the presentation could have used more polish.
