This movie has a very peculiar "doll"-like art style; a pretty one, that is quite different to other animes. And the movie is kept quite close to Japanese traditions, showing how people in that time and place were living, dressing, cooking, and building families together. Furthermore, the dramatic story is great, then heavy, and then great again.

Very recommendable. Maybe too slow for some, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Anyone with some knowledge of history may know what to expect from this war film, but the childish tone still leads to some poignant, heartwarming moments. This masterpiece builds up the warm atmosphere, only to crush it with shocking brutality and despair. In This Corner of the World is the adaptation of Fumiyo Kono's manga of the same name. It plays out like a documentary of the life of Suzu Urano, a talented artist in a small rural seaside town next to Hiroshima. The film carries tons of dramatic weight, showing the aftermath of the U.S. bombing raids before the Japanese surrendered.
