Halo: Combat Evolved (also referred to as Halo: CE, Halo 1, or simply Halo) is a 2001 military science fiction first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft. The first game of the Halo franchise, it was released on November 15, 2001, as an exclusive launch title for the Xbox gaming system, and is considered the platform's "killer app". More than five million copies were sold worldwide by November 2005. Microsoft released versions of the game for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X in 2003, and the surrounding storyline was adapted and elaborated into a series of novels, comic books, and live-action Web shorts. The game was later released as an Xbox Original for download onto an Xbox 360 hard drive. Halo is set in the twenty-sixth century, with the player assuming the role of the Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier.     I actually liked this Halo the best...I felt like there was a feeling of exploration and mystery in this one. The sequels were a blast, but mostly all felt the same. So much so, I don't really get too excited for Halo games anymore. Bring the series back to it's roots.

    I was expecting this to have aged badly but it's so fun to play. Very few cutscenes and scripted crap, once a level starts you are basically playing non-stop; I always feel bad killing the little grunts though...

      Editing … I played this for about an hour with some friends once. It was fun. I've never played any of the others, or a Call of Duty, or a Battlefield, or Team Fortress 2, or Borderlands.

    Halo Combat Evolved to me is one of the best shooters ever made. knocking golden eye down a peg after being years of the king.

    Halo CE made Xbox one of the best systems ever. That said... Halo 2 was a horrible game, an opinion that is not shared by most but the story of Halo CE was Excellent only to crumble apart in the 2 game. Halo 3 thank god made up for all the pitfalls of Halo 2.

    Joking aside, Halo: Combat Evolved nails one of the most important elements of a great story: mystery. I like not knowing exactly what’s happening. That’s one of the reasons I love games like Dark Souls, or television shows like Lost. The allure of The Hatch, for example, was irresistible.

    I was on a ship. We’d fled from a battle. We found a giant floating ring in space. Then we had to land on it, and we had no idea what we’d find. That was a trail I wanted to follow, even when I could clearly see the box trap down the line.

    I played plenty of Perfect Dark and Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo 64, but Halo was the first console shooter I played where I didn’t wrestle with the controls. Remember when switching to your grenades was a thing? Or switching to your melee weapon? Halo was the first game I played where gunfire, grenades, and melee thwacks were all one touch away.     A game that forever changed the way we play first-person shooters. It was the original science fiction shooters that lived up to the hype in its epic soundtrack and its bright, spectacular graphics. It allowed players to handle a one-man army who could eliminate entire armies on a gigantic battlefield.
    Even the multiplayer arenas gave players the freedom to explore gigantic, colorful areas. It definitely is one of the best.
