Americans loved Franz Ferdinand more than the Arctic Monkeys in this decade. I have no idea why. Maybe it had to do with Ferdinand's slick album cover that harkened back to Russian avant-garde imagery, or the way that they just wanted to make "music that girls could dance to." Either way, Americans just loved them because they were the cheesiest, hippest punk-ish band in the new post-punk wave. And hey, I was cool with them. Then the Arctic Monkeys came along...

Franz Ferdinand is a band emerging from a new alternative rock movement from the early 2000s, the Post-Punk Revival, with bands like The White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes. Sadly, I’m not too familiar with a lot of the albums from these bands, with the exception of Arctic Monkeys. So I decided to remedy that by listening to Franz Ferdinand self-titled debut album, from 2004.

Upon first listen the overall feel I got from the album was that it took a while to get me invested, but after “Take me Out”, the song that most stood out to me, started, the album gets really enjoyable.

I gave it a second listen to solidify my thoughts, and this time I enjoyed “Jaqueline” and “Tell her Tonight”, the first two tracks, more than I did at first, but I still think it’s the weakest part of the album. In contrast, Take me Out’s infectious beat is still the highest point of the album.

The rest of the album is just pure catchy bliss. Similar to Arctic Monkeys early output but a bit more slow, but never losing the punch. And, although I still prefer AM’s debut when compared, with tracks like Take Me Out, Cheating on You and Darts of Pleasure, and, of course, the explosive last track, this is an album that will definitely see more relistens in the future.

Editing … I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with this album when it came out and I've went off the band completely since then. I went to see them in concert and they were supported by The #Editors. A much stronger band in my opinion.

Editing … I loved the band when they started. Their riff and strumming style just kind of stuck with me. However, they lost their fire some time after the third album. They were sort of experimenting with dance hall music and then it became less punk-ish...? Anyway, the Americans loved Franz Ferdinand more than the Arctic Monkeys in the 2000s. Because...dance and punk baybee, yeah?

Editing … Well anyway, I got really hyped when the band popped up on NPR. I was sort of eager to listen, because their album cover looked cool. And the band blew all the listeners away. It was the best thing on web video for a while, at least until the Arctic Monkeys showed up. Bloc Party was also okay, but they only got better when the Asian drummer took off his shirt. Lol.

Editing … RIP to the good Bloc Party. Y'know, back when Matt Tong was the most badass drummer in the post-punk scene.

Editing … I still really like that album, just solid fun rock all the way through, after that it was diminishing returns though. No You Girls was the only song they did later that could touch the singles from this album. I liked Editors too though, they were kind of an Interpol knockoff but they did it well.

Editing … The Interpol knockoff period was fun, though. She Wants Revenge always gets pissed off if anyone ever compares them to Interpol. Lol.

Editing … Lol. Take it as a compliment, guys! To me it is no big deal if a band takes after another band like that as long as the songs are good.

Simple-minded and fun without being obnoxious. Franz Ferdinand has perfected the recipe for an album that just wants to have a good time. Phenomenal hooks, catchy instrumentals, and memorable lyrics. The album is consistently energetic and wild without being in-your-face about it. Every now and then, I give this record another spin and I never regret it. While so much of my music is so heavy and thought provoking, this record is a great refresher for throwing all the problems out the window and having a great time. The pinnacle of 2000s alternative.
