(Watching this at Anime Expo 2017)
WTF? This can't be the same as the original Fate/Stay Night. That show took so damned long to get good. This Zero edition starts with some holy war and all this fire and death and s**t. This makes no freaking sense! But it looks pretty tight. Hmm...

Editing … Pretty sure it's the same continuity but a different story. I haven't gotten to any of the Nasuverse yet though so can't say for certain.

Editing … The first few episodes kind of threw me for a loop, because I knew very little about the original Holy War, but there was all this violence and the audience at Anime Expo was getting all hyped and yeah, those drawings looked shockingly good. Took me a while to adjust to the triple-A level of animation.

Editing … Makes me wonder what the first Holy War was like. If the fourth war was this nuts, the first one must've been the apocalypse.

Editing … Same here. The convention this year happened on the same weekend that I was going to a cousin's wedding, so I couldn't make it. Oh well. There was probably a big line for everything anyways. The crowd only gets bigger every year...

Editing … I've heard of it, sure. But after all this time I still have no clue what the series is about. It completely defies common sense. For one thing it looks like it's set in the modern world meanwhile Saber is dressed like she's from medieval europe. And the characters have names like Archer and Caster and Saber. And it's occasionally set in cyberspace. My brain doesn't know how to piece together any of this.

Editing … It's an urban fantasy story with mythological motifs. I think there are alternate timelines/time travel too if I recall correctly? What's hard to understand?

Pffft I just started watching this and in the second scene the characters are just walking around in circles just so that there will be movement during the ridiculous amount of exposition.

Editing … The first episode of Fate/Zero is fucking horrible. The explanation is basically required as there was no way they could've fit it into the series without cutting something important and it would've made no sense without it if you hadn't played the visual novel.

Editing … The explanation is easily sufficient, Fate/Zero was the first thing in the fate universe that I watched and I had no issue understanding but it was just really heavy handed. In retrospect I'm glad they did it this way however. We saw the alternative in Fate/stay night series earlier this year where for several episodes they just explained the same thing over and over in universe style and it was annoying. I'd rather just have the information dump.

Editing … When I receive large amounts of exposition without feeling any connection to the characters it just goes in one ear and out the other and I don't understand anything.

Editing … Well you may want to stop watching and watch #Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works first then. You can watch them in either order and the internet argues about what order to watch them in all the time. I personally think you should watch #Fate/Zero first as I believe it's the better show but it was made with the understanding that you would know what was going on with the grail war. If you want to stick it out with Fate/Zero a super simplified version of the exposition is as follows. Holy Grail is an artifact that will grant it's owner a wish. You 'win' the grail by fighting in a battle between 7 chosen mages and their spirit familiars and killing the summoned spirits. This was put in place because in the past armies fighting over it was getting really out of hand and all the mages were dying. The spirits are all famous individuals from history. There is some more specific stuff about the priest and the two other guys but that is explained more as the series goes on anyway. The gist of the first episode is that the priest guy and the mage he is with are going to secretly team up in what is supposed to be a free for all fight.

Sorry I'm a bit late, if you are not opposed to violence you should watch Fate/Zero! It's got some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen in an anime and the story is gripping. There is a bunch of arguing about the proper order to watch the Fate series but anime wise I think watching Fate/Zero before Fate/stay night is the right way to do it. (Just a heads up that the first episode is quite bad but it is necessary to actually understand what is going on.) This is pretty popular so I'll throw a few more recommendations your way in case you have already seen it but not listed it.
