(Watching this at Anime Expo 2017)
WTF? This can't be the same as the original Fate/Stay Night. That show took so damned long to get good. This Zero edition starts with some holy war and all this fire and death and s**t. This makes no freaking sense! But it looks pretty tight. Hmm...

Editing … The first few episodes kind of threw me for a loop, because I knew very little about the original Holy War, but there was all this violence and the audience at Anime Expo was getting all hyped and yeah, those drawings looked shockingly good. Took me a while to adjust to the triple-A level of animation.

Editing … I've heard of it, sure. But after all this time I still have no clue what the series is about. It completely defies common sense. For one thing it looks like it's set in the modern world meanwhile Saber is dressed like she's from medieval europe. And the characters have names like Archer and Caster and Saber. And it's occasionally set in cyberspace. My brain doesn't know how to piece together any of this.

Editing … It's an urban fantasy story with mythological motifs. I think there are alternate timelines/time travel too if I recall correctly? What's hard to understand?

Editing … Bleach is urban fantasy. So is X. (the clamp series) Even without watching those you can sort of pick up on what they're about. Fate defies intuition. It doesn't help that it's originally a visual novel, the name makes it SOUND like a romance story, and yes, there are multiple canonical timelines. (apparently due to the fact the VN had branching paths) And I only know some of that because just now I watched this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9emhXQtYljw p.s. Turns out the PSP game, Fate Extra, is a separate story, so I guess I can just play it without worrying about the rest. Turns out the Saber in it is Spoilera separate character. I fucking knew it. I knew that if the characters have names like Saber than there HAVE to have been previous Sabers or other concurrent Sabers. That in itself is pretty unusual though. In most fiction the names and titles are kept separate. I also still don't know the explanation for why all the Sabers look the same. They're definitely not androids. That would be too simple of an explanation.

Editing … The simple answer would be that the Holy Grail War is a contest where each person is forced to kill each other by summoning Servants to fight each other. In Fate/Stay Night (the original visual novel), Shiro gets killed by a Servant. Rin Tohsaka revives him, but by doing so, he gets forced into the Holy Grail War. So it's like Battle Royale/Hunger Games--battling to get your normal life back.

Editing … Fate/Stay Night was technically supposed to be the fifth and last Holy Grail War. So Zero is the haywire prequel. It almost jumps right in to the action in the fourth war, expecting people to already understand what's going on. It didn't matter at the Anime Expo, though. I think the audience just wanted death and blood. Lol.

Editing … I mean, this was ORIGINALLY an eroge visual novel, with sex and nudity and "romance." But like all Type Moon games, it turned into a behemoth of a franchise with spinoffs. I just try to enjoy the ones that matter. Or I guess the ones that I think matter. >_<

Editing … it always seemed like a chobits style affair. It's written all over the protagonist as he looks like the blandest douche imaginable. Apparently he does fight in battles at some points, but I dunno from where he got his powers. It's all very mystifying.

Editing … Hell, I didn't even think people would get hyped over freaking Fate, but then everyone at AX was getting hyped over all this fire and violence in the first few episodes. I couldn't tell whether they were hardcore weebs, but they seemed to like it, so whatever. If the animation looks awesome, they're happy. >_<

Editing … And I'm just sitting there, looking confused because this was originally some eroge battle royale, where the servants regain their energy by having sex with their masters. That's how it used to be. But then the Fate anime replaced it with some dream sequence in a vagina...and now they reduced most of the sexual junk altogether.

Editing … Honestly, I don't blame anyone for getting confused with the Fate franchise. I just play the Type/Moon games. Most of them follow a similar story progression to the original visual novel. And they do a better job at conveying the Type/Moon vibe of storytelling.

Editing … I'm just saying, it's freakin' Fate. Lol. It was never one of those hot properties, but Fate/Zero caught a ton of buzz before AX. It was crazy! I honestly had to double-check, just to see whether it was the same ridiculous franchise as frickin Fate/Stay Night sex with servants yo yo. Then again, Type Moon had been showing off Melty Blood nationwide at anime conventions. Y'know, the best fighting game that no one had ever heard of until now. I should've known that they were gathering the anime illuminati cult.
