Not quite as good as its sequels, but still the game that started the series, so that deserves something.

Master Chen In my personal opinion, the very first game was always waaay better than the sequels. It just feels more full and complete, a title truly polished to the maximum. DKC 2 and 3 didn't really feel like that to me personally, at all. The only DKC game which matches first one at that, is Tropical Freeze, in my personal opinion.

Gries opinions, how do they work. I could barely reach the first boss when I played this back in the day on snes and I feel that I'm wasting my time whenever I start a game that I can't finish for some arbitrary reason. Rayman Legends and Origins did it right, both were rather difficult but never punishing.

Aramonde I guess just different generations of gamers.

Aramonde That's also not an insult btw

Alianger w/ good reflexes and some patience for memorization: 4/5. A let's play could be entertaining! Edit: make that average reflexes, just tried it again and made it to the third world with 40+ lives.

Firion Ara be reasonable, I mean at least he gave it a 0/5 only. I would give beyond a score somewhere in the negatives

dvd This is the first I've heard of DKC being too hard. It's been a long time, but I don't remember having trouble beating it as a kid (I was 9 years old). I remember DKC2 being harder, but still not NES-level difficult. I don't think Rayman Origins is much easier either, if at all. Maybe my skills have atrophied or something.

IceTheRetroKid Lol @ With Save States, ungh, come on, the game isn't THAT hard, it's a fair challenge. Then again, gamers had more skill back then...

Aramonde "atrophied" learned a new word, thanks dvd

Magus Yeah, I don't find this game super-hard or anything. I guess it's a step up from Mario and post-original Metroid though. And I can't speak for the newer Rayman games but I find the original on PS1 pretty aggravating!

IceTheRetroKid I'm 22 and I can beat this game still to this day...break my youngin' hood.

I'm not kidding, but the Graphics in this Game STILL look Good today!!! This is an amazing Platformer Game that even puts most Mario Games to shame. Great work Rareware!

Truth be told the level design really isn't that great compared to the gold standard (the Mario Bros. series), but the colorful graphics and sound made up the difference. One of if not the best relaunch of a video game character ever.
