Editing … Yeah, those two cables will do, but you definitely don't wanna spend 13 euros on a cable... Dig around a little more on Amazon and I'm sure you can find one for 3 euros. I always order this stuff off AliExpress for like 50 cents, but shipping takes at least a week since it's coming from China. As for the SSD... I looked up the specs on this Alienware PC, and it seems the X51 only supports SATA 3 from R2 onward, so you gotta check what version you have. If you have SATA 2 ports, your SSD speeds are gonna take a significant hit, and you might as well just get the 750 as you're not gonna notice any speed increase with the 850. You also generally don't wanna "future proof" your components, because by the time you're gonna upgrade your PC again, those components could be a lot cheaper, more power efficient, use different standards, etc.

      Editing … I have the one from 2012 with a GTX 660 and 8 GB RAM; I'm not sure if that's the R2 or R1 model of the x 51 -- edit: it's probably the R1.

In real world use I don't notice a whole lot of difference, obviously it depends on your usage though. Either way it's certainly nothing compared to going from HDD -> SDD."

Editing … SATA 2 is capped at 300MB/s whereas SATA 3 is capped at 600MB/s. But yes, whether you're actually gonna notice a difference in real-world situations depends on a lot of factors. I'm just saying not to splurge too much on the SSD as you're dealing with the bottleneck of old hardware. If the choice is speed or capacity, I'd go with capacity.

Let's say I'm in the market for one of them newfangled geforce graphics cards. I'd need a new PSU for it, too, I suppose, unless I'm keen on having a bunch of expensive plastic melt inside of my chassis (which I'm positively not). So, can someone point me to an adequate power supply that enables me to install a gtx 1070 into my x51? Btw, the alienware x51 has an external power supply

Today was the first time I ever connected my #Alienware x51 to the interwebs after owning it for more than 1.5 years. The first thing that pops up is a notification that I really should download these supposedly extremely crucial 108 (!!) windows 7 updates. You gotta love it.

my alienware x51 just arrived in the mail, dell fixed everything, reinstalled windows and installed a new motherboard - all free of charge. Unfortunately they are holding my 1TB HDD hostage and installed a formatted 100GB one instead without my approval. Thankfully they offer me the exclusive chance to buy my own harddrive back from them for an undisclosed amount of money. scumbags
