F-Zero may have a very limited selection of four racers, but that fact does little to diminish the overall feel that this futuristic racing game presents: while driving a hover car (!) with excruciatingly fast speed, shortcutting by virtue of mind-bogglingly high jumps with a potentially fatal ending, and trying to break that cursed time record - you listen to some of the most memorable tunes of the entire 16-bit era.

Drivers have a health bar as they take damage from bumping into the rails or into opponents. Even they have one - that's why you need to avoid them whenever you lap them. Them being slow is one of the mechanics to keep early first place players busy. The other one is the all-famous rubber band mechanic.
