    Utterly Mediocre.
The Revenant is far too long; an instigating battle contains the majority of the action, with little else to entertain the viewer for the 2hr36m running time.
Be /totally/ enthralled as Leo Caprisun grunts his way through a snowy forest for a while, and then falls off a cliff and doesn't die. A fall that kills a horse does not kill him. In a film where the entire gimmick is based upon verisimilitude, the protagonist obeys some sort of divine cartoon logic. Ironic isn't the half of it.
There are worse movies. But the lack of plot, memorable characters and abundance of wide shots (we get it, you're in a forest, no need to cut to another establishing shot) make it difficult to recommend. Not worth the Oscar buzz. And certainly not the best directer film of last year.
