The Genesis port looks amazing. It's a huge improvement over the original DOS version and even the Amiga and Atari ST versions. But it has a lot of bugs, making it almost impossible to finish without using GameFaqs (you do not get some quests). GOG still sells the ugly DOS version, not as good graphically, but pretty much the same game. It's funny that a 1986 game has a planet exploration system better than Mass Effect's Mako.
