Back in 2006 I was 15 years old and I still remember it like it was yesterday: there I was, standing in an electronics store surrounded by PS2 games. I saved up 20€ from my allowance to buy one game.

"Oh, what's this? This cover looks very stylish. Let me see. Resident...evil...4? Never heard of it. Oh, look! Tomb Raider Legend! I fondly remember watching a friend of mine play through tomb raider 2 and 3 on the PS1 back in the day. Guess I'll go with this instead of RE4."

And thus my (so far) decade long affection with the tomb raider franchise began.

I must've completed TR Legend at least five times on PS2, I collected everything there was to collect and did all the time trials.
A bit later I got TR Anniversary. Beat that game a couple of times.

My family bought me a Xbox 360 in December 2008 for 200€, which was just so much money for me/us at the time that I felt guilty. (I made it up to them two years later by buying my parents half a laptop for 200€, so basically I paid them back :))

Guess what one of my first Xbox 360 games were? Exactly. TR Legend (unlocked all achievement for it) and TR Anniversary.

Then came TR Underworld and my god did it look beautiful. Loved it. It had two pretty cool pieces of DLC.

Fast forward to December 2010. I just started my first job, I was sitting in the classroom of my boarding school, next to me the most beautiful girl I ever met (she had a crush on me). I was browsing gameinfomer.com when they had their exclusive reveal of the new tomb raider game. It's when I first saw Lara's new look. I said to myself: "isn't she gorgeous? Brown hair, brown eyes..." when the girl next to me said "I have brown hair and brown eyes..." to which I replied "Well, you ARE gorgeous.".

Anyway. TR 2013 turned out to be fucking glorious.

Somewhere down the line I gave my PS2 copies and strategy guide of TR Legend and TR Anniversary to my nephew, since I double dipped on 360, like I mentioned above. So naturally my nephew got hooked on those two games, too. I got him Underworld and TR 2013 for PC. Next month he turns 18 and what else am I going to get him for his birthday but Rise of the Tomb Raider? :)

Later this year I will finally have the chance to play Rise of the Tomb Raider myself when it comes out for PS4.

It all started in 1998 in Hungary in the house of my buddy and look where we are now.
Man, what a journey. I hope this franchise will still be around when I'm in my 50s...

Editing … I really like the series too, when the first game came out I had never played anything like it. But anyways, did you and that girl hook up or what?

Editing … TR: Anniversary was really brilliant, to me it's up there with the Sands of Time trilogy which is saying something. I didn't think Legend or Underworld were nearly as good though.

Editing … I sometimes wonder how different my taste in gaming would be today if I bought Resident Evil 4 instead that day.

Editing … tragic how virtually everyone deferred from sony to xbox at the start of that gen. including me. Repeated hardware failures and paid online eventually knocked some sense to me.. although I could easily forgive those things.

Editing … 360 seemed like the better console at first so I bought it too, I don't regret that (all my friends had 360s too and playing online together was great) but I do think PS3 was better in the end. I stand by going with PS4 over XB1 this gen so far, better exclusives out/on the way for my tastes.

Editing … I get why everybody ditched the PS3 at the beginning of last gen, the PS3 was really expensive and the 360 had a ton of big third party exclusives in those early days. Bioshock and ME were a huge deal. Even I was tempted. But then most of it came to the PS3 eventually so...

Editing … Yeah, I went with 360 at first because of Halo 3, Gears, ME1 etc plus a way lower system price. Then PS3 got its act together mid gen (i.e. Uncharted 2 happened), Microsoft stopped putting as much effort into exclusives around the same time and PS3 ended up being the better console.

Editing … yeah that's another thing I forgot to mention. This is proof that price point decides everything. (unless it's nintendo since their systems obviously don't count)
