A great tribute to the Contra games of the past. It takes all of the run n' gun fun of the early games in the series, and unfortunately all of the hair-pulling difficulty that goes along with it. Thankfully, the new "Rising" mode is an excellent addition, allowing you to upgrade your characters with more life, more continues and juiced-up power-ups shots. The sharp 2D visuals and metal-influenced soundtrack from Arc System works are pretty nice too. But... later frustrations in the game... goddamn.
