He uses fresh wood from trees to build a fire. Fresh wood takes a hell of a lot work to keep burning. He's in a shelter during a whiteout snowstorm that doesn't appear to have any air holes and it gets completely covered with snow. Which would cause suffocation overnight. All things Hugh Glass frontiersman would've known among some other things.
