The opening is badass. The pacing, directing, music, and characterization are phenomenal. The movie loses a bit of steam in the last third, as the pacing slows and Mathilda begins acting more like a believable human being (which is oddly a con for me). Partway through, I was considering that this might be my favorite movie and that Leon and Mathilda combined would be my new favorite character. Each does get a top ten spot. At its best, this film has a masterful balance of intensity and emotion. The occasional jokes are slid in effortlessly. Subtle acting and directing are used to convey characterization. The interactions between Leon and Mathilda are beautiful, believable, and heartfelt. This odd couple never feels odd. The shocking actions are never off putting. I fell in love with these characters and this story.
