This movie seems a bit more cutesy now that I'm older, but as a kid I found the splitting apart of this friendship and the abandonment of Tom extremely depressing. Watching Tod and Copper's playtime getting split up and knowing the larger conflict that's going to develop used to tear at my heart as a child. This movie changes so much in tone and focus over its duration that it seems to cover all of life, and even though the ending is happy, it's not the ending I wanted, which left me feeling conflicted and not sure how to feel, which kept me coming back. The hunter isn't really a villain, just a man with a gun and a bad temper. Also, foxes are adorable.
