Just had a thought. I bet part of why professional game review scores are so bloated is because of school test scores where anything under a 60 is failing (and in a lot of people's minds a D is failing as well even though it technically isn't). It gets people into the mindset that anything below a 70 is bad and 70-79 are just okay so game reviewers give at least an 8 to anything they like. The way I score things, anything above a 5 means I like it and a 5 is neutral.

Editing … Universities seem to do things differently. Anything above 70's a really good mark.

Editing … Yeah everyone came up with this already.. It's hard to deny really. But the strange thing to realize from this is that 10 or 100 point reviews aren't nearly as prevalent in film reviews.

Editing … "Yeah everyone came up with this already" I'm slow. Maybe the sort of people who like movies aren't the sort of people who like numbers as much. People who like numbers tend to be nerds and nerds tend to have less of a social life and therefore more free time to spend on things that are longer than movies such as video games.

Editing … I attribute it to two things. 1) the film medium is much older and the industry is therefore more "mature", 2) the audiences for game reviews is or has been comprised of idiots and kids.

Editing … After all it's possible to like numbers in lieu of properly understanding abstract concepts like quality, design, and taste
