Looks like you're in luck, @Gries He. They showed off 10 mins of gameplay during a livestream today, and the battles are like Chrono Trigger. Enemies appear on the field, and if you touch them, everyone walks into battle formation and you fight them on the field using the ATB system. Also like Chrono Trigger, the overworld is heavily zoomed out and there are no monsters on it.

Specifically the Crono + Frog combo X-Strike was in the new trailer: https://youtu.be/3dhPavSo7v4 (it's probably also in the 10-min gameplay video, but I didn't watch the whole thing) So yeah, they're really going for it.
