The series took a darker, more deranged turn this season. It was basically the opposite of season 2, with a slowed down pace to match. It's the only season where I really like the first episode, because it starts out simple and doesn't leap right into battles. The smaller initial cast allows the characters to be more complex and likable than the heroes of season 2, and the Digimon partners stand out more. Takato, Henry, and Rika have unique relationships with their Digimon, and the Digivolutions are way cooler than they were in season 2. The bio merges were a great idea that pushed the concept of Digivolution forward. The season eschewed continuity with the first two seasons to stand out as its own thing and provide a new Digital World. And the whole thing is directed by the same guy as Serial Experiments: Lain! On the negative side, the cards were stupid and the season didn't completely hit its stride until over halfway through.
