At the center of Dan Gilroy's directorial debt is one of the best acting performances Jake Gyllenhaal has ever given. What sticks the most - at least for me - is not so much the subject matter but instead Gyllenhaal's facial expressions. Dan Gilroy spends a lot of time focusing on his main character's - Louis Bloom - face and for good reason. Editing … This performance in unison with Gilroy's screenplay makes for an insightful look at what an individual is willing to do to achieve in their live, making Bloom one of the best character studies of 2014. I have nothing but praise for Nightcrawler. In a year where I felt there was a lot of good thrillers Nightcrawler is easily the best out of the bunch. Undoubtedly one of my favorites of 2014.
