John Maclean's directorial/screenwriting debut, Slow West, showcases that the Western is alive and well. The American frontier is as still just as much of grand stage as it has ever been and Maclean makes the most out of it in his debut. For those who're familiar with the Western genre Slow West won't be pulling that many surprises. The tired & true message of "The West is Hell" is strongly present here, though Maclean sharpens his focus on one central concept of that ideology; survival. The mentality of "Killed or be Killed" can be found embedded in basically all Westerns. In Slow West, Maclean uses it as meditation to understand what is life truly worth living for. Maclean gets this across quite strongly and brings it home nicely. The simple conversation/interactions shared between Fassbender & McPhee establish this and the ending brings it all together in one grand conclusion. As far as acting goes I must say McPhee leaves the strongest impression. ...

Editing … That's mostly due to his character being the most well defined and most compelling; his naivete and innocence are the cornerstone to this films concept and McPhee nails the role. Fassbender is regulated to the type of role Clint Eastwood used to play and I must say he's pretty good at it. Mendelsohn doesn't have too much to say in this film which is a crying shame as he can play a pretty damn good antagonist when given the material. The score itself is quite orchestral for a Western, no doubt because of Maclean roots as a musician. It's quite good, it does a wonderful job in setting mood and creating ambiance. The Cinematography is beautiful as well. It bolsters a lot of great scenery shots, the type of stuff that would make Malick proud. As far as debut's go, John Maclean has left quite an impression with Slow West. It's a beautiful, comedic, bleak, retrospective look at the American West, a must see for fans of the genre. Can't wait to see where Maclean goes next.
