There's something about Chihayafuru that is able to take the seemingly tame concept of karuta--a card game based on classical Japanese poetry, memorization, and quick reflexes--and make it intense and exciting. Protagonist Chihaya's unrelenting passion for improving her game never fails to be endearing and inspirational, and the story plucks expertly at the heartstrings of anyone who's a sucker for themes of friendship and family. Oh, and the art is exceptionally beautiful. Now I'm dying for a third season!
