By Frieza's debut, Dragon Ball had set high standards for a threatening villain. Goku and friends had already dealt with evil emporers, armies, assassins, demons, and alien invaders capable of devastating worlds. Which makes it all the more surprising that Frieza came off as the greatest threat of any character in the franchise. Even ignoring how Frieza wielded immense power with ease, his goals were threatening and his mannerisms convinced readers/viewers that he was capable of everything he threatened. Though he may have been a bad influence for the medium, Frieza truly warranted a 30 episode fight scene that stretched longer than many shows in their entirety.
