How's everyone else defining what's a drama and what isn't? Is it just every fictional TV show?

Editing … Broadly speaking, it's used for all of the non-comedy TV fiction shows, as well as some of the comedies that have significant enough serious parts to be called comedy-drama. So no on Family Guy. You could interpret it more strictly as serious talky time shows like The Wire as opposed to blatant action-thrillers like 24, but my guess is it won't go down like that.

Editing … So no full on comedies? Okay but even then that's one hell of a broad genre. I reckon HIMYM, Only Fools and The Simpsons are comedy-dramas so I'll count those. What about Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone?

Editing … Wikipedia "A drama film is a film genre that depends mostly on in-depth development of realistic characters dealing with emotional themes. Dramatic themes such as alcoholism, drug addiction, infidelity, moral dilemmas, racial prejudice, religious intolerance, sexuality, poverty, class divisions, violence against women and corruption put the characters in conflict with themselves, others, society and even natural phenomena."

Editing … No, it's a sitcom. You can't classify anything that might make you a bit sad as a drama. Then the category looses its meaning. It's a sitcom which in turn is characterized as situational comedy within returning environments. HIMYM is also, first and foremost, a sitcom.

Editing … But the thing is HIMYM tries to have DRAMA at the end of each episode, which is why it's FUCKEN called Comedy-Drama, same as Scrubs. Yay, Lily and Mashall are a happy couple, but then they have to decide whether to stay together or not and end up breaking up. Yes, Ted looks hilarious in those red boots, but the entirety of his story is about how he is a sad miserable lonely 30 year old man looking desperately for a woman to stay with. Yes, Barney is awesome and he hits on all the ladies, but his mother is a whore and he never met his father. Half the show is a tear jerker.

Editing … Fantasy is a different type of genre that has to do with the theme of the show though. Not the same as general categories such as action, thrillers, comedies, dramas. Sitcoms can have elements of drama too as it's a pretty broad genre. Which is why HIMYM is a sitcom. Seriously, it really is a sitcom (hint: it has a laugh track). To classify it as a drama is to put it into the same booth as Forest Gump and Sopranos which is not correct at all.

Editing … I dunno, personally it's one of the shows that made feel the saddest to me, more than tearjerk-only moments. It's what I enjoy about the show, how 50% of it's comedy and 50% of it it's drama and emotional moments. Heck, I'd say the premise itself is dramatic by itself, it's about a guy who is trying is best to find someone to love and to be loved. And at the same time trying to forget a woman that (spoilers) ends up marrying his best friend. (End of spoilers :I) It's the drama of the show that makes it great and make the comic moments even more enjoyable, because they aren't constant. And to dismiss that, I personally can't.

Editing … If there's such a thing as drama-comedy then HIMYM definitely qualifies. @TanteGuro You seem concerned the genre's going to lose all meaning but I'm not convinced it has any. Having dramatic character interactions is a hell of a generic trait.

Editing … The main genre should be drama then imo. HIMYM is a drama second, and a comedy first, it doesn't belong in a drama list and my list reflects that by not including what I would class as comedies. But I never cared for this list to begin with so I'm not fussed. I just like to do things my way.
