Serial Experiments: Lain is weird, depressing, complex, and creepy. It's not a show for everyone, as it's very avant garde and doesn't explain things clearly. The animation is simultaneously realistic and stylized, the music fits the haunting tone beautifully, and the characters are memorable. What starts out just surreal becomes a surprisingly emotional and dramatic experience with some really great twists, and in just thirteen episodes the show tackles a massive array of subjects.
