In one word: sophisticated.

"Death Note" is a psychological crime manga that revolves around the Japanese high school student Light Yagami who finds a mysterious book with fatally fateful effects – the thrilling quest for justice has begun!

It uses only a slight breeze of fantasy in order to set the premise up – but other than that the plot is strikingly down-to-earth. Being heavy on the dialogs, I was pleasantly surprised by how *well* these characters are written. And the schemes they concoct in order to out-smart each other … UMMMM! Class-A!

I had two fairly minor issues with the ending and, unfortunately, the German translation has one too many stupid typos for my taste. Also, the last third of the story appears to be not as strong as the previous arc.

But other than that, I've never read a more thrilling manga.
