First and foremost, I will call this movie by the name it should have actually been called. Evil Dead 4. It's definitely a Evil Dead movie, and it's definitely not a remake of the original.
A reboot? Maybe. Either way, it doesn't really matter, because I'm sure the reception would be the same.
With that said, I think Evil Dead 4 is a pretty good and solid addition to the series.
    Bite me.
I honestly don't see why the hate on this movie. I assumed there was hate. I made a search and found out that there's hate. But why? There's so many bad remakes out there and I can tell you that this is not one of them.
The biggest complain I see around is that this movie looks and feels too much like modern movies. Well, no shit, it's a modern movie. I'll tell you, if all horror movies of this decade where as good as this, we'd be having a pretty good decade for horror movies.

Editing … This is a modernized Evil Dead, yes, without a doubt. But that's fine, it's a 2013 Evil Dead, the original was product of it's time, and this is a product of our time. Either way I can still see a lot of the series trademarks in here. Not just the chainsaw and the cabin, but the camera angles, the special effects, the overall atmosphere. Everything screams Evil Dead.

Editing … There's just one trademark missing. Ash. (If you don't count that two seconds cameo, that I will admit, it made me laugh). Again, I'm fine with this, this is why I decide to count this as a sequel rather than a remake, though. But I don't think people would be ready to see someone else play Ash, so not having him in the movie is actually a good decision. Other than that, as it stands on it's own, Evil Dead is, like I said, a pretty solid movie. It's intense, it's dark, it's gory beyond relief, it's goofy sometimes, though they decreased it a lot compared to the series origins. It's definitely a more serious movie, with a more serious plot, that I will admit, I didn't really cared much, but hey, I didn't really cared much about the character's story in the other Evil Deads, though it's true they didn't really shove them at your face like in this one.

Editing … Honestly, I don't think I have more to say, I can respect the people that hate this when compared to the originals but, maybe because I'm pretty much a kid growing up in this generation of movies, I cannot understand it.

Editing … Cartoon Network is kind of making a comeback for people because of Adventure Time and Regular Show. Disney Channel has Phineas and Ferb and The Hub has Pony. Nick has TMNT and The Legend of Korra but it still seems stuck in a rut to a lot of people.

Editing … Personally, there's a decent amount of horror remakes and reboots that I really like. I think people simply get emotionally attached to movies that they grew up with, and find it blasphemous to "replace" that with something that sells to a newer generation. It is often done with a quick cash grab in mind, but it is nice when it's done with a genuine respect for the original source material. I know there are plenty of movies that I wouldn't care for today had I seen them for the first time as an adult.

Editing … That's definitely true. There are a lot of cases where I think the movie would have done better if it was completely unrelated to the original source material (I.E. Godzilla) but this is not even one of those. This is a good Evil Dead movie.
