What counts as "Sci-Fi" here seems arbitrary and a bit too wide spread. Eternal Sunshine, A Clockwork Orange, and Brazil really shouldn't count. They're better described as 'Drama' if anything. Same with the comic book based films, they just really don't belong here either. It's hard to draw the line really.

Editing … Brazil and Clockwork Orange are futuristic dystopias, Eternal Sunshine deals with (drum roll) fictional science. These films also incorporate elements of drama but drama and sci-fi aren't mutually exclusive genres. In any case, complain to Wikipedia or IMDB for categorising these films as sci-fi (among other genres) since they tend to be the frame of reference used here.

Editing … I don't think genres like dystopia, drama and sci fi are mutually exclusive either but I did leave a few films out for not being sci-fi enough. The Bond films have sci-fi gadgets, most comic book films have some sci fi explanations for what's going on and The Prestige has a sci fi twist to it but I didn't think that was enough.

Editing … I don't deny that there's sci-fi elements to those films, it just feels too broad.

Editing … Yeah, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this list. I love Back to the Future, but I never really thought of it as a sci-fi movie first. But then I think about time travel being it's primary concept, and I'd feel silly for not including it. I suppose it's just not what I think about when I think about "sci-fi", because I don't think it would have immediately crossed my mind to include it if I had a clean slate of movies to choose from for this list.....which is odd, because crazy scientist, flux capacitor, and time traveling delorean just scream SCI-FI, and I'd certainly consider material like The Time Machine, Dr.Who, and Futurama as sci-fi.....my head hurts.

Editing … I mean, I eliminated Battle Royale and Eternal Sunshine from my list because they didn't feel sci-fi enough for me. I consider Eternal Sunshine a love story foremost, and I don't even know how to classify Battle Royale. These movies, as well as super hero movies, simply wouldn't have crossed my mind to include here.

Editing … I have a feeling that THIS is going to be the list that I'm constantly going to be editing, and second-guessing. I always thought of Arnie as being an action star rather than a sci-fi action star - He's done a surprising amount of sci-fi action movies, and I guess I never sat down to really think about that. I came into this list thinking "where's Tron?", and ended up thinking "yeah, I guess Back to the Future IS as sci-fi movie."

Editing … The way I see it and purely imo, Tron has sci-fi (or maybe sci-fi and action) as its primary genre(s). Terminator has sci-fi and action as its primary genres. Whereas something like Back to the Future has comedy as its primary and sci-fi as its secondary genre. Donnie Darko has maybe mystery as primary and sci-fi as secondary. The Girl who leapt through time has romance as primary and sci-fi + comedy as secondary genres. Futurama has sci-fi and comedy as its primary genres. — There are elements from that secondary genre present but the focus lies on the respective primary genre. That's why some of these seemingly "fit" and some don't. Since FL doesn't have (and maybe never will have) a distinction between primary and secondary genres, I don't mind or care having BTTF suggested for this list. I'd rather have such a distinction but I can live without.
