What makes this the best game in the series is not the gameplay but the story. Kratos was just a killing machine and we were left with bare-bones reasoning for his actions until it was given more detail here. He's a more interesting and relatable character by the end, and the final moments make everything that follows in the series warranted. The only prequel for God of War that will ever matter.
