You had to play Final Fantasy VI at, or at least near, its time of release to truly love it. It's plain to see how revolutionary the game was back then, but time has trampled over it. Certain aspects of the game have aged so horribly that the game itself became an exercise in patience. Also, a friendly warning: if you're tempted to play the PS1 port - don't. It's horrendous!
Pros: Great soundtrack, superb and diverse storytelling, solid story and characters, attempts to mix things up in the gameplay department, great sidequests, lots of secrets
Cons: The random enemy encounter rate is TOO DAMN HIGH, tedious gameplay and boring combat, unappealing visuals (although technically impressive for its time), uninspired and poor level design, overly long dungeons, some of the sidequests are too difficult to track down without a guide, PS1 port suffers frequent and lenghty downtimes even for the most basic of actions

Editing … I agree with you about the random encounters being too high. I still like it though, I think it's still a good JRPG even today. It's certainly better than most modern attempts in my eyes.

Editing … Yeah I never cared for this one either, never for any particular reason I just didn't enjoy it, stopped about half way through. It doesn't help that both it's predecessor and successor are so damned good.

Editing … Have you played Lufia 2 Pudding? I think you might like it a bit more.

Editing … Can't say that I have, nod. Is emulating it the only chance of playing it nowadays? Unless I own a SNES, that is. Which I don't. :/

Editing … As far as I know yes. It was actually the game that got me into emulation back in the 90s.
