Dragon Quest VI seems to be when the series slowed down and started to be the ostensibly traditional series it is now known as. That isn't a slam though, because DQ VI proves that the original "JRPG" series understands that formula on a level few others do. VI doesn't really do much new, but it is one of the bigger Dragon Quest games with lots of content and expanded game mechanics like the job system. Just a damn satisfying gem.
