Would you guys reject me (or someone else!) renaming JRPG to Japanese RPG since WRPG is Western RPG and KRPG is Korean RPG?

Editing … I'm actually in favor of renaming the JRPG page to "CRPG" (command rpg) or "MRPG" (menu based rpg) and the WRPG one to "Action RPG"

Editing … That method of renaming would be an absolute nightmare. Not all WRPG's are action RPG's CRPG is more commonly known as the abbreviation of Computer Role Playing Game. I have never ever heard anyone say MRPG ever. Changing JRPG to Japanese RPG would not be that bad but whenever I have discussed JRPG's in real life people do say "JRPG" and not Japanese RPG / Japanese Role Playing Game.

Editing … That would be ideal, but I don't think people would understand those descriptors. I wish the gaming industry had adopted them early on so they were common place in video gaming vernacular, but unfortunately, those terms are more for RPG elitists who want overly complicated genre classifications.

Editing … @Louis Bromilow: So would you say that #Final Fantasy IX is a JRPG? That doesn't even make sense because it was developed in Hawaii, not Japan. Is ##Dark Souls a WRPG or JRPG? What about #Costume Quest ?

Editing … The reason I'm suggesting a name change is entirely due to consistency on the site. It makes no sense to have KRPG and WRPG represented as Korean RPG and Western RPG and have JRPG as JRPG. I mean, if JRPG stays as is, then I think Western RPG and Korean RPG should be renamed to WRPG and KRPG respectively.

Editing … JRPG or Japanese RPG, it doesn't really matter as long as the second one is in the alternative names. In my opinion, Doubleagent is right, any fan of these games will search JRPG first.

Editing … I think the best way to do that is to refer to the "style" of the gameplay and not the location the game has been made. FF9 is a J-style RPG and Dark Souls is a W-style RPG.

Editing … Well, yeah, but at the end of the day, the W/J/K are still referring to the location, though. Someone wanting to know what the J means is going to get Japanese as a response. As I said, I'm seeking consistency. I'm just OCD about things like that. It makes no difference to me.

Editing … Disturbing demographic classification. Genres should be titled and ranked based on their play-style not country. The King's Field series demonstrates the hypocrisy. Call it what it IS; The King's Field Series is an first-person role playing video game. Same goes for world music; JPOP, Japanese-Pop Music, Korean Rock, etc. Would you name music based on your country? UPOP (United States Pop)?

Editing … It is not just a location based classification. I quote myself from two posts up. " It is about the style. It is called Japanese RPG because the style of game originated in Japan. Anyone from anywhere can make a JRPG." The english speaking world gets to call their pop just "Pop" because it's the default. I imagine that some countries have names for pop from the states other then just "Pop" because it is significantly different in style to their local pop.

Editing … JRPG tells me nothing about it's play-style. Its assuming stereotypes of its predecessors without holding merit. It's as vague as the term JROCK. For example, the Japanese band Versailles would be under the genre 'neo-classical metal'. Classification is based upon substance or actual gameplay rather than sweeping vapid country labels.

Full response in actual thread as it is too long. http://www.favslist.com/forums/JRPG-and-WRPG-227-p2#6782 Just because the name contains a location does not mean it is solely based on location stereotypes nor does it mean everyone from that location fits that genre.

Editing … Someday we may see new designations, but for now, we simply call JRPG a kind of RPG which originated from Japan, and maybe I'm wrong, but for me it's a genre. But, really, genres are like politics, or even society, there's no real limits and we could write a thousand pages about video game genres without finding a good compromise. In everyday's life we call a spoon, a spoon without even knowing the signification, designation is aleatory. And for me, it's fine because, even if I can't describe why a WRPG is a WRPG, and why a JRPG is a JRPG, I know when I play both.

Editing … @Sha Ember JRPG is a kind of RPG which originated from Japan, that is my point. It does not say anything else about the game except its origins. Is it a Turn-based JRPG? Is it Visual-Novel JRPG? It also comes down to the elimination of the acronym J, since sub-genres can cross over. For example a JRPG having WRPG traits. I am just pointing out the failures in labeling JRPG/WRPG as such in preconceived sweeping generalizations that do not explain the actual game except the origins.
