While 'The Dark Knight' probed the bleaker realms of the superhero psyche, Robert Downey Jr.'s captivating turn as Tony Stark kicked off a stunning career comeback for the once-troubled actor and proved that heroes can be complex and edgy without taking themselves too seriously.
