Editing … Symphonia was great, one of my all time favorite games. I don't think the ones that came after it were quite as good, but a very good series nonetheless. - Ulty

Editing … Fuck yes, Tales of the Abyss FTW. Xillia and Vesperia are good too but the stories are crap. I'm not totally sold on this one just because I'm not sure if the handheld Tales games have been as good, but I'll be looking out for reviews and opinions.

Editing … Hearts is actually the only handheld mothership Tales title to be developed entirely by Namco Tales Studio, and it's on par with the home console entries. The battle system is easily the fastest 3D battle system in the series and offers the most air combo potential. You can pinball enemies across the screen as you keep warping behind them, Dragon Ball Z style. There's also a loose class system, which is very rare for a mothership title. It's super simplistic (6 disciplines to dump points into), but gives you the freedom to go against a character's canonical role. Story and character wise... Eh, it's alright, which is my opinion on most Tales games. Anyway, out of the 15 Tales games I own, this one definitely sits in the upper half.

Editing … Yes it does, and I wish I'd known about the demo save file unlock before I started a new game, because then I would've been able to dress up Kohaku in a bikini the moment she becomes playable, rather than unlocking it much later. :( So play the demo first. :P (assuming that feature carries over) There's guy-pecs to be seen as well, if that's more your thing.

Editing … Innocence was alright, and a helluva lot better than Tempest, but it still felt like it was missing something for me. You could definitely tell it was developed by Alfa System and not Namco Tales Studio.

Editing … I've been wanting to get into the Tales games. What one would be best to get me started in the series? I've heard Symphonia is highly rated, but should I go for a newer one like Xillia?

Editing … Yes, Tales of Phantasia is the first one so it's good to start with it, but if you want a good story, then in my opinion Tales of Symphonia or Vesperia.

Editing … Ah, thanks :) Makes sense to start at the beginning. Well in that case, I shall start with Tales of Phantasia and keep an eye out for the HD remaster of Tales of Symphonia in the meantime. I've been looking to get into a good rpg series to tide me over till Persona 5 ^^

Editing … If you want the most modern game the series has to offer, I don't think it matters too much if you start with Abyss or anything later than that. Older games feel a bit dated at this point, but there are plenty of people that prefer the 2D installments. My favorite game in the series is actually Rebirth, which was released after Symphonia, but was still 2D. The only games I don't recommend starting with are the spin-offs, because they're not very good, and Legendia, because it was developed by a different team and has a different feel to it. Other than that, it really all comes down to what it is you want out of the game.

Editing … I don't mind playing older 2D games and I know not to judge them too harshly on story/gameplay. Really just looking for a taste of the series, get a feel for the tone of the series and see if it's something I could see myself diving into.
