Deus Ex wasn't groundbreaking because it incorporated stealth or RPG elements into the FPS genre. Hell, Thief had done that with stealth and Daikatana definitely did its best to incorporate RPG elements into the FPS genre. But Deus Ex was the first to mix all these elements together so seamlessly, and offer opportunities to switch gameplay styles on the fly and leaving the playstyle choice entirely up to the player. You could complete the missions any way you wanted to, giving the game enormous replay value and it was groundbreaking for this reason. As a first person shooter, it stands to this day as one of the best, though the graphics and story hasn't aged all that well today.
