Serial Experiments Lain was a unique anime experiment, where the characters delved into deep conversations about philosophy, religion and the individual self. The abstract drawings of Yoshitoshi Abe truly redefined how anime fans analyze animated work. Lain isn't the most popular anime around, but it surely is one of the most intellectual shows ever made.
